TasteAtlas Launches 5 Best Rated Filipino Recipes

Knowing that Filipinos have a good relationship with food and cooking, there is no doubt that other countries recognize the unique and tasty recipes in the country.

In fact, TasteAtlas released an article showing its best-rated Filipino recipes that were judged by different individuals around the world.

Narrowing the many mouthwatering recipes in the Philippines, here are the five recipes that have gotten the spotlight, showing the culture and tradition of the Filipinos.

1. Lechon

Known as a dish that will never be absent during special occasions, lechon made it to the top list of the best-rated Filipino recipes.

Lechon is a dish that is made from an entire pig or piglet that is stuffed with different ingredients such as onion, garlic, lemongrass, bay leaves, and other spices. To accomplish such a tasty dish, lechon is cooked slowly over charcoal.

With the innovation of the Filipinos when it comes to these kinds of dishes, they also put twists on lechon, such as making it more crispy and adding more ingredients, such as seafood stuffed inside the pig or piglet.

“The preparation of lechon is lengthy, but the Filipinos see it as an excellent opportunity to socialize,” the TasteAtlas captioned.

2. Turon

Commonly consumed by Filipinos during meriendas or breakfast, turon obviously made it to the list.

Turon is a Filipino snack that is composed of saba bananas rolled in sugar and wrapped in a lumpia wrapper. To add more flavor to this known snack, some Pinoys add langka or jackfruit along with the saba bananas and roll the turon on caramelized sugar to add more sweetness.

TasteAtlas also mentioned other Turon combos such as sweet potato, mango, coconut, cheese, and sweet mung bean.

A famous eatery in Manila also made a twist on the traditional Filipino turon by using rum to add more flavor and pairing it with a milk dip that makes it thicker compared to the original turon recipe.

Turon is commonly sold across the streets in the country and has a price range of Php15 to 20 depending on its ingredients and size.

3. Tocino

Favorite baon of almost all Filipino students, tocino has also made it to the list! Composed of thin slices of pork belly and pork shoulder, this Filipino recipe is made special by its sweetness due to marinated meat.

Tocino is commonly served with fried rice and sunny-side-up eggs, and the meal is called ‘Tocilog.’ To prepare this recipe, you need to marinate the meat with a mixture of salt, and sugar for a few days.

As mentioned by TasteAtlas, these ingredients can be replaced with healthier alternatives such as pineapple juice, anise wine, and annatto powder.

4. Sans Rival

Known as a Filipino dessert, sans rival is composed of layers of cashew nut-piled French buttercream.

“The contrast between the rich, buttery cream, the nut meringue, and the sprinkled chopped cashews gives the dessert its unique texture,” TasteAtlas described.

Just like other desserts, a sans-rival cake is best served chilled for the ingredients to be compact and the cashew nuts to be crunchy when consumed.

5. Isaw

Isaw, commonly seen in the streets around the country, is a known Filipino street food made from pork and chicken intestines. Even though this recipe is made from the inner organs, consumers should not worry, as the preparation for isaw is meticulous just to make sure that it is safe to consume.

To lessen the unpleasant smell and taste of the intestine, ingredients such as soy sauce, vinegar, salt, dried bay leaves, and other spices are needed, and a few rounds of cleaning sessions are needed to make sure that the unnecessary components of the intestine will not be included.

One of the reasons why this Filipino recipe is unique as compared to foods worldwide is that it showcases how Pinoys try their best not to dispose of other parts of the chicken or pork for common recipes such as fried or boiled.
